in-flight cyberspace

i have to record here that i’m having my first-ever inf-flight online experience; as i waited to board this flight from new york to san francisco, it was announced that there was a free trial promotion of a new in-flight internet service, provided by Gogo; a team of young women in bright green t-shirts circulated through the waiting passengers offering us the free trial, & many people took it up. they had a laptop so that we could register while we waited, altho this took some time as it was one of those tiny laptops & the web site had clearly been designed for a big screen. so after a lot of scrolling back & forth, about 3 of us got registered before we boarded.

now i’m happily surfing in the sky; everything i want to do works & it’s a reasonable speed. apparently it does not work for VoIP & a few other things. it works on other devices such as phones & PDAs, & will cost slightly more for laptops – when i asked why, the girl said it was because laptops have bigger screens … ??? well i don’t know but at least it’s coming at last.

the main downside of in-flight internet is the cramped non-ergonomic position. the guy seated in front of me must have some kind of fidgetting disorder, & perhaps a slightly broken seat – he reclined fully immediately after take off & has proceeded to shift & squirm & adjust his seat-back constantly for the whole flight; really annoying! but … bumpy internet is better than no internet : )
